From Guidance to Deployment: How Simpl Helps Put DSSC’s Guidance into Practice
Dear DSSC audience, have you missed me? I left the DSSC about a year ago to take care of the Simpl Programme, but my friends tell me you’re doing great, though the challenges are still tough and progress remains a matter of patience. I’ve come back to visit today to share a few thoughts. Hope to have your attention for a few minutes.
Europe’s data spaces are entering a more operational phase. The question is no longer only how a trusted and interoperable data space should be designed, but how organisations can deploy, connect and sustain one in practice. This is where the relationship between the European Commission’s Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) and its Simpl Programme becomes especially relevant. DSSC provides guidance, reusable assets, support and coordination for European data spaces. Simpl-Open provides modular, open-source middleware that can help turn those principles into working technical solutions.
Of course I have a vested interest in its success, but I have no problem reminding you that Simpl-Open is not the only technical option to European organisations and businesses. It is one open-source option among several. Its relevance to Europe lies in its ambition to deliver a working implementation aligned with European legislation and Europe's preferred specifications and standards, such as the ongoing work on Trusted Data Transactions at CEN/CENELEC. It also provides an environment where DSSC's principles and building blocks can be applied, reviewed and improved through practical experience.
A practical complement to DSSC guidance
DSSC helps data space initiatives navigate business, legal, governance, operational, functional and technical questions. Its assets, including the Blueprint, Toolbox, Glossary, Co-Creation Method and Maturity Assessment, create a common foundation for developing interoperable and trustworthy data spaces. DSSC also supports initiatives through community and sector orchestration, targeted coaching and collaborative projects addressing recurring challenges.
Simpl-Open approaches the same challenge from the implementation side. It selects, curates and maintains reusable open-source components for interoperable data sharing, designed to integrate with existing solutions rather than replace them. Data space initiatives can use the complete middleware stack or select the components that fit their architecture and needs. In that sense, DSSC and Simpl-Open are complementary: DSSC structures the guidance and shared practices, while Simpl-Open offers software through which relevant parts of that guidance can be implemented and tested.
From Blueprint to feedback loop
The value of this relationship is not one-directional. Simpl-Open can provide an implementation path for organisations using DSSC guidance, but deployments can also generate practical feedback for DSSC. Experience from installation, integration and operation can show where guidance is clear, where additional examples are required and where data spaces encounter recurring barriers.
This creates a useful loop between guidance and practice. DSSC assets inform the design and development of Simpl-Open. Simpl-Open deployments, in turn, provide evidence, lessons learned and reusable examples that strengthen future DSSC guidance.
Supporting data spaces as they operationalise
The new phase of DSSC places strong emphasis on helping data spaces move towards deployment, operationalisation, interoperability and sustainable scale. Cooperation with Simpl-Open can make this support more concrete. DSSC-supported initiatives could explore Simpl-Open components when assessing technical approaches, use Simpl-Labs to test interoperability (coming 2027) and provide implementation feedback, and draw on Simpl-Open examples when translating architecture choices into deployable solutions.
At the same time, Simpl-Open can benefit from closer access to the DSSC community of Common European Data Spaces. Their requirements and implementation experience can help the Simpl community prioritise features and improvements based on real operational needs. Joint knowledge sessions, technical clinics, implementation showcases and co-authored case stories could connect practitioners facing similar challenges and make lessons reusable across sectors.
A renewed basis for collaboration
DSSC and the Simpl Programme have been collaborating for a couple of years now, perhaps not always in the most visible way. As both initiatives move into their next phase, there is an opportunity to renew that cooperation with a stronger focus on practical outcomes. Relevant areas include alignment between DSSC guidance and Simpl-Open implementation, participation in technical support activities, joint validation of practices, and showcasing implementations that demonstrate both what works and what still needs improvement.
The most useful partnership will be based on reciprocity. DSSC can offer Simpl-Open access to practitioner needs, shared guidance and a European community working across sectors. Simpl-Open can offer DSSC implementation evidence, open-source components and feedback from deployment. Together, DSSC and Simpl can help ensure that lessons learned in deployment continuously strengthen the guidance that shapes Europe's future data spaces.
Join the conversation
At the third Simpl Annual Community Event in December 2026, which I will once again have the privilege of hosting, the Simpl community will discuss the next stage of adoption and implementation. DSSC will share the stage with us. We welcome data space initiatives and participants, suppliers of services and software and all other stakeholders to join the discussion and share the practical challenges that should shape the next phase of cooperation. Register for the Simpl Annual Community Event here.
